We
could all use a little conservation
Ontario will face
many environmental challenges over the next few years. Here's
three that are at the top of the list --
-
ENERGY
-
GARBAGE
-
URBAN
SPRAWL
Conservation can
help! Through conservation, we can reduce energy consumption
by up to 20%; reduce garbage by over 50%; and protect prime
farmland and significant natural areas while fostering healthier
urban development.
But it's not
going to happen overnight. We need to re-build the
conservation movement in Ontario, both at the provincial level and
at the community.
The Conservation
Council of Ontario has set four priorities for rebuilding
Ontario's commitment to conservation. They are:
-
Improve the
level of funding for conservation planning, coordination, and
campaigns;
-
Strengthen
the capacity of Ontario's communities and community groups to
conduct education, outreach and support programs;
-
Support
individual organizations in their areas of conservation
expertise; and
-
Develop and
execute coordinated conservation outreach campaigns.
The more Ontario
grows, the more it needs conservation.
When the Conservation Council of Ontario was founded in
1951, Ontario had a population of 4.6 million people.
There are now over 11 million people in Ontario living in
4.5 million homes. Each
one of those people is a consumer.
Our challenge is to make sure they are also conservers.
In choosing
between a conserver and a consumer society for Ontario, the choice
should be clear. |
