Ontario's
Eco Summit 2002:
Showcasing the best in NGO Activities |
Register
Online www.greenontario.org/ecosummit/
Imagine if we all
came together to renew our support for a healthy environment and
conservation.
There are so many
issues demanding our attention and action -- from Kyoto to
endangered species. In each case, part of the solution lies
in conservation -- instilling conserver values into our society
and economy.
Green energy /
energy conservation is a good example. An important part of
the solution for climate change and smog is for citizens to use
less energy. How can we meet this challenge? A green energy
strategy includes the development of new technology and economic
instruments, but it also needs public outreach and
support.
Ontario's
non-governmental organizations have shown strong leadership in
promoting energy conservation -- including Pollution
Probe's Clean Air Commute, Bikeshare,
Autoshare, the Green
Power Trade Show and the Green
Communities home energy audit.
Ontario's Eco
Summit will showcase NGO activities and investigate ways to
strengthen Ontario's commitment to conservation.
Participating organizations will have their activities included in
our special report and will have the opportunity to present their
best projects and ideas as part of two "showcase"
sessions at the summit.
To register, go
to www.greenontario.org/ecosummit,

Environmental
Commissioner's Annual Report |
ECO
Press Release
Environmental Commissioner Gord
Miller released his third annual report to the Ontario Legislature
on September 26, citing the loss of biodiversity as a "flashpoint" concern
underpinning many of the environmental problems facing the province. In his press conference this morning at the Queen’s Park Media Studio, Miller listed the species he is most concerned about: the woodland caribou of northern boreal forests, the eastern wolves of Algonquin, and the lake trout of Ontario's inland lakes, a species that "symbolizes the clear cold waters of our northern wilderness."
"What's most frustrating is that Ontario has made international, national and provincial commitments to conserve biodiversity, and those commitments are being completely ignored," said
Miller. He called on the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to develop a provincial biodiversity strategy before Ontario faces a major crisis in this area.
