After the
August 14, 2003 blackout that left much of eastern North America in the
dark for several days, the Conservation Council of Ontario released a Four Point Energy Conservation
Action Plan for Ontario. The four points were:
- Price
energy to promote conservation
- Create
an Ontario Green Energy and Conservation Fund
- Support
community-based conservation outreach and education campaigns.
-
Strengthen
standards for green energy and conservation.
Much of our
plan has been adopted by the government in their approach to electricity
conservation and energy security, although some of the challenges, such as
linking an energy surcharge to conservation subsidies, remain unsolved. The
Conservation Action Plan and related pages are available here so that we
may compare our progress over the next few years against the challenges we
set for ourselves after the blackout.
