Your green home
away from home!

What is a green hotel?

A green hotel is one that considers environmental aspects in all areas of operations, including building management, guest services, and dining.  Things to look for are:

  • energy management (building efficiency and conservation measures)

  • waste management (avoiding hazardous waste, and promoting the 3 Rs -- reduction, re-use, and recycling)

  • food preparation (providing organic, bioregional, and vegetarian options)

In preparing this factsheet, we have looked for hotel certification progams, published policies and programs within the hotel business associations and major chains that demonstrate a commitment to incorporating environmental values into their operations.

It's getting easier to find a green hotel in Canada, but you still have to do a little searching.  There are several environmental programs for hotels, and their websites list the participating hotels across Canada.  Here's the list of green hotel programs we know of...

  • The Audubon Green Leaf™ Program -- a Canadian certification program managed by TerraChoice (the Eco Logo people) in association with Audubon International.  The program is designed to recognize hotels, motels and resorts that are committed to improving their fiscal and environmental performances. The Green Leaf Program recognizes a property’s achievements by awarding one to five green leaves: one for a minimum of devising and committing to a set of environmental policies and principles; and two through five for results achieved by applying those principles.
  • The Hotel Association of Canada's ECOmmodation Rating Program -- a graduated rating system designed to recognize hotels, motels, and resorts that are committed to improving their fiscal and environmental performance.  Based on the results of a comprehensive environmental audit, hoteliers are awarded a 1-5 green key rating and given guidance on how to "unlock" opportunities to reduce operating costs and environmental impacts through reduced utility consumption, employee training, and supply chain management.
  • Green Hotels Association  -- an American association whose purpose is to bring together hotels interested in environmental issues.
  • Green Globe 21 -- an international certification program, managed by the World Travel and Tourism Council Click on the Members List to search for Canadian hotels. (No Ontario members found)

The World Travel and Tourism Council operates the Green Globe 21 program, a worldwide certification program for sustainable Travel & Tourism.

 a) Hotel Associations

Neither the Ontario Hotel and Motel Association or the Hotel Association of Canada have environmental policies on their websites, but the Hotel Association of Canada does operate an environmental rating program for Canadian hotels.

For environmental policies in hospitality industry associations, you have to look to specialty associations that have been set up internationally.  The Green Hotels Association is an American association with a handful of Canadian member hotels in Alberta and B.C.  The association is committed to encouraging, promoting, and supporting ecological consciousness in the hospitality industry.

b) Hotel Chains With Environmental Polices

You can find a complete list of hotel chains in Canada at HotelsTravel.com.

Hotel names may stay the same, but the parent companies change pretty rapidly, and with them the environmental commitments and policies can shift as well.

Bass Hotels (shich included Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza Hotels) used to have a terrific policy. The parent company is now Six Continents Hotels, which has a section on Social Responsibility and a "Conserving Our
Planet" initiative" where participating hotels would manage
   1. A hotel-level environmental event.
   2. Acceleration of the SCH “Conserving for Tomorrow” program.
   3. System-wide implementation of an environmental self-audit.
   4. Fundraising to benefit United States Fund for UNICEF’s global clean water campaign.

Fairmont Hotels (formerly CP Hotels
):  Fairmont operates two hotels in Ontario; the Royal York (Toronto) and the Chateau Laurier (Ottawa).  The former CP Hotels' Green Plan is one of the best. It covers solid waste, toxics, energy efficiency, and wildlife protection. In Ontario, CP Hotels was awarded the Conservation Council of Ontario's Lieutenant Governor's Conservation Award in 1992.

Information on their environmental programs is available on their website by clicking "about Fairmont" and "Our Philosophy".
